
Green Jobs Training Program
Background
Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ) provides the city's only comprehensive green jobs training program, approved by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and accredited through Dillard University in New Orleans, LA.
We are part of a consortiom that includes the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University and the Laborers-AGC Education and Training Fund (L-AGC)
to deliver job training skills for the emerging Green Economy. The consortium has implemented programs in
Job Opportunities
DWEJ's twelve-week worker training program provides unique opportunities for developing community-business-university relationships. Building on its success,
Program Participants
Participants must be 18 years of age and older. In addition, participants must be drug free and pass an entrance exam. Participants are screened through testing and interviews.
Program Components:
Basic Skills
The training itself includes a basic skills component, technical training, on-site job training as well as team work. Within the six-week basic skills training, which utilizes a work-based learning curriculum, classes include study skills, mathematics, introduction to hazardous materials, physical fitness, computer basics, life skills, and job readiness. There is also a counseling component that provides students with problem intervention and assistance, and information on a wide range of social services to aid them in achieving their educational and vocational goals.
Technical Training
Participants will receive state certified training through this program, including Lead, Mold and Asbestos Abatement, Hazardous Waste Operator Training-EPA Approved Technician Level, Energy Related Technology, and Environmental Assessments.
After satisfactory completion of the technical trainings participants will be fully certified for each technical segment, and provided with confined space certification, CPR training, first aid training, and OSHA workplace cards.
Job Placement and Career Training
Throughout the training, participants will work with a job developer learning skills such as: resume building, interviewing techniques and other career development skills.
