Thank you DWEJ for everything you have done. This job is wonderful and has changed my life. I really appreciate it. Everything I learned in the training program I use daily on the job. The basic skills training got me ready for the job, and the physical training got me in shape. My attendance is great and I'm always on time for work.                                                                                - Grayling Owens, 2008 Graduate

**Classes run M-F, 8:30-4:30.

In the transition from a pollution-based economy to a green economy, there is a significant need and opportunity for skilled workers trained to address environmental issues.

DWEJ's Green Jobs Training Program, funded by the US Dept. of Labor Pathways Out of Poverty through Jobs For the Future/United Way Detroit Regional Workforce Fund,  is focused on building a green collar workforce to transform the city's 50,000 brownfields into viable and sustainable communities (or assets for Detroit).

Goals:

  • provide meaningful employment opportunities to underemployed and unemployed individuals, primarily in Detroit
  • create equality in accessing green jobs and creating green businesses for Detroit residents
  • expand opportunities for local businesses in green and brownfield industries through a highly skilled and trained Detroit-based workforce
  • transform the lives and communities of Detroit through sustainable, environmentally just and green job practices.

The 2011 Green Jobs Training Program is a 12-week program that includes the following:

  • Basic Skills (Job Readiness, Life Skills, Environmental Literacy, etc.)
  • HAZWOPER certification
  • Lead Worker certification

  • Asbestos Worker certification

  • OSHA 10 workplace card

  • Confined Space entry

  • Deconstruction: Deconstruction is the selective dismantlement of building components, specifically for reusing, recycling and reducing waste. It is a way of salvaging all of the value in a building that is to be taken down.
  • Phase I/Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (intro and sampling methods): Phase I assesses the
potential for environmental contamination and history of a site. Phase II specifically focuses on obtaining
    sampling information for contamination.

Because our highest priority is employment, a full-time job developer works to ensure that successful graduates are placed.
